Disable a Service

To disable a service: 

service <service> stop
update-rc.d <service> enable|disable

With systemd (starting with Debian 8): 

systemctl disable <service>

To (re)enable a service: 

update-rc.d <service> enable|disable
service <service> stop

With systemd (starting with Debian 8): 

systemctl enable <service>
